Meet Timothy Durant, the maverick stylist who's rewriting the rulebook on barbering and styling, as the founder of Austin’s queer-owned, inclusive barbershop, SCRUFF'S BARBERSHOP.

Hailing from the rugged terrain of a South Texas ranch, Timothy's early days were filled with chores, horseback rides, and a burning desire for something more. In a world where glossy fashion magazines like Vogue offered glimpses of heightened reality, Timothy found his escape and a hint of the extraordinary in the world of style and hair.

Durant’s roots stretch deep into the heart of Texas and beyond, with Cherokee Nation and Chickasaw blood. But the call of city life, the allure of fashion, and the need for adventure beckoned. He yearned for the glitz and the glam, both of which seemed out of reach but were tantalizingly close to his spirit.

Haircare wasn't an immediate calling; it was a revelation that came in stages. His childhood haircuts, mostly crafted by his mom, ignited his curiosity about the world of hairstyling. It wasn't until a visit to a local mall salon at age 16 that the spark truly ignited. Mentored by a salon founder, he found his calling in the art of hair.

After beauty school and stints in San Antonio styling the hair of Texas socialites, Durant’s path led him to Los Angeles in 2006. There, he immersed himself in the world of beauty, working with photographers, and conquering high-fashion shoots. He climbed the ranks to become a global educator for Kevin Murphy, a world-renowned haircare brand, and traveled the globe, including multiple trips to Australia, to fine-tune his craft.

In 2016, with a desire to reconnect with family and give back, Durant made a bold move: he shifted his base from LA back to Texas; Austin, this time, with Murphy's support. But as he began taking on more and more clients in his home, he had a bigger vision. He dreamed of a barbershop that fostered inclusivity and community in the city. That dream became a reality with the launch of SCRUFF'S BARBERSHOP, which opened in East Austin’s Saltillo Lofts in 2019.
